Seven Islands Wildlife Reserve

I went to a great place today that I can't believe I had never heard of before - the Seven Islands Wildlife Reserve.  It is only about 20-25 minutes from my house in Fountain City and was the perfect place to go walking with our dogs.  It is located on a peninsula stretching out into the French Broad River and has over 360 acres of rolling hills, fields of grain, maintained paths, water access, old farm houses/barns, and lots of room to run!  We were able to connect several trails and ended up walking about 5 miles.  It wasn't until the end of our walk that we came across anybody else on the trails.  There was one group of 5 ladies with about 15 dogs with them, all off leash.  They scrambled to put them on leash when they saw us, but we reassured them that our dogs had been running free the whole time too until we saw them!  We had packed our lunch so we ate on the porch of one of the old houses on the reserve that is now being restored for use as a caretaker's house or visitors center.  All in all it was a wonderful outing with our dogs.  Words can't really do it justice, so take a look at some of the pictures that I took ...

I thought you might find it interesting that the Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge is located on what used to be my family's farm (or at least part of it). When my grandfather died in 1995, my mom and her siblings along with their cousins just couldn't care for the farm. So, they sold the farm to a trust, but didn't know for what it would be used. However, there was a stipulation that it could not be subdivided or turned into commercial or industrial. Little did they know how awesome that place would become! I'm glad you enjoyed going there - it's beautiful, isn't it?
