Mardi Growl 2009
We had a wonderful time at Mardi Growl in downtown Knoxville this past weekend. We dressed up the dogs and ourselves in green, purple, and yellow attire and headed out to hang out with over 500 other Knoxville dogs! There was a parade through the Old City of Knoxville, a costume contest, and lots of dog oriented vendors and rescue groups to look through. We will definitely have to make this a yearly tradition!

Seven Islands Wildlife Reserve
I went to a great place today that I can't believe I had never heard of before - the Seven Islands Wildlife Reserve. It is only about 20-25 minutes from my house in Fountain City and was the perfect place to go walking with our dogs. It is located on a peninsula stretching out into the French Broad River and has over 360 acres of rolling hills, fields of grain, maintained paths, water access, old farm houses/barns, and lots of room to run! We were able to connect several trails and ended up walking about 5 miles. It wasn't until the end of our walk that we came across anybody else on the trails. There was one group of 5 ladies with about 15 dogs with them, all off leash. They scrambled to put them on leash when they saw us, but we reassured them that our dogs had been running free the whole time too until we saw them! We had packed our lunch so we ate on the porch of one of the old houses on the reserve that is now being restored for use as a caretaker's house or visitors center. All in all it was a wonderful outing with our dogs. Words can't really do it justice, so take a look at some of the pictures that I took ...

ESK Gala
On Saturday night Brett and I went to the Episcopal School of Knoxville Gala (the school that Brett teaches at). There was a silent and live auction, along with dinner, drinks, and live music. This is the 3rd time that we have been, but the first time that we actually bid on something. We went in with Brett's sister and her boyfriend to bid on a 2 night stay at a cabin in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge! And amazingly we won for a really good price ... thanks to Brett's smooth bidding skills. He waited until the last 5 seconds of the auction to write down our bid, so the other guy that was bidding didn't have time to write down a new bid!! Now we have something fun to do over Spring Break!

1/2 of a Snow Day
After we all already made it to school this morning the snow started pouring down and by 11:00 we already had almost 2 inches. So a decision was made to close schools at 12:30 and dismiss all the students. But by the time we made sure all the students were safely on their way home it was around 2 before I got out of there ... so it was kind of a 1/2 snow day! Brett and I made the best of it by taking our dogs for a romp in the snow at Sequoyah park.

Mardi Growl for Knoxville Dogs!

Any fellow Knoxville dog owners out there should join me on Saturday, February 21st for Mardi Growl! Its a costume parade through downtown for dogs and their owners. The parade starts at 11 am in the Old City and ends at Market Square. Right now pre-registration is available for $8 per dog, with all proceeds benefiting the Williams-Young Animal Center (Knox County animal shelter). You can print out the registration form online and send it in by February 13 or register online. After that it is $10 per dog. Everyone who registers gets a doggie goodie bag! Last year over 350 people registered! One of the labradors from the movie "Marley and Me" will be the Grand Marshall of the parade, and there will be a contest of best dressed dogs for his royal court. You can also browse the grooming and vaccination stations and food vendors that will be onsite. There will be Mardi Growl dog shirts and photos on sale as well.
My husband and I have registered our 3 dogs. Now just to figure out costumes! Hope to see you there with your doggies too!
